The Exe Valley Way – Stage 4 – Thorverton to Bickleigh
This stage of the route is 4 miles long. With a route passing through country lanes that takes you high up the sides of the Ex Valley towards the village of Bickleigh, it is also suitable for cyclists. The southern half of this stage of the route climbs high up the sides of the Exe Valley. You will see superb views over the valley and beyond, and as far as the sea on a clear day.
Starting at the small green in the middle of Thorverton, take the minor road to the right which climbs gently. Turn left at the first farm track, climbing then descending to a crossroads.
Go straight over the crossroads. This will firstly go uphill, before descending steeply back to the floor of the Exe Valley. Go past Bickleigh Castle, well worth stopping for a few minutes, and at the road junction continue ahead. Don’t forget to take your camera with you, there are lots of great photo shots to be had along the way.
When you have had your fill of the view, start off on your walk again. Cross the bridge to the main road at Bickleigh. Cross over the Exe using Bickleigh Bridge then fork left down the minor road to Bickleigh Mill (Devonshire’s Centre), Bickleigh village shop is straight on behind the Mill.
