Waterhead Creek, Kingswear
This week’s Wednesday Walk is a circular route around Waterhead Creek in Kingswear, South Devon. The walk will take you through the creek itself and some lovely nearby woods. You may well see boats out on the creek, as well as some incredible views of the River Dart.
To begin, head to the Banjo (i.e. the the turning area opposite the shop the buses stop) in Kingswear itself. From here you’ll see a steam railway bridge – cross over it and follow the footpath alongside the railway line.
Head through the small gate on the right when you see it, and walk along the narrow path next to the creek. As this point of the walk make sure you stop for a while to take in the absolute beauty of the creek. For example, you should be able to see a wide variety of birds and other wildlife.
When you’re ready to to continue, follow the path until you reach some wooden steps. These will take you to a green area near the head of the creek, called Jubilee Park. With plenty of benches this is a great spot to stop for a picnic or refreshments!
Follow the path along the southern edge of the creek which will take you towards Darthaven Marina. From here simply cross over the bridge which will take you back up to the Banjo you started from.
