Saturday Stories – Todd the Fearless Hero
This week’s true Saturday Dog Story features a Golden Retriever named Todd whose sacrifice saved his owner from a vicious snake bite and nearly cost him his life. Todd’s owner, Paula Godwin, was out for a hike with him and her other dog in Arizona, USA when out of nowhere she realised she had almost stepped onto a rattlesnake.
As a native from Arizona, Paula is used to the dangers of rattlesnakes and knows the telltales signs to look out for such as an audible rattle. However, this snake was just resting in the road, slightly camouflaged, which meant she didn’t spot it.
The rattlesnake, angry at being disturbed and possibly threatened by her, arched up ready to bite Paula’s leg. Sensing the danger, Todd immediately charged in front of her to protect her and took the snake bite himself onto the side of his face. After the bite Todd was immediately yelping and crying in pain. Paula, fearing for her brave dog’s life, immediately scooped him up and sprinted to the nearest hospital, making it there within 10 minutes.
By the time they arrived at the hospital Ben’s face had swollen up an incredible amount. Doctors at the hospital administered the anti-venom straight away and kept him in for over 12 hours. Thankfully, the anti-venom worked and Todd gradually began to recover. Paula has since shared pictures of Todd’s ordeal on social media, with her hero dog receiving a a lot of praise online.
Paula and Todd clearly have a great relationship, which is something that Devon Dogs can help with for you and your dog. Why not come along to one of our workshops and see for yourself? Check out our training events calendar.
