Summer Vegetables at Bowerland

Wow – what a year it has been so far for our very own summer vegetables!  I am sure you can even see them growing, inch by inch! Here, in the depths of Dartmoor, our vegetable crop normally is a bit slower than that of our more southerly neighbours. But the same can’t be said for this summer. Everything is sprouting up, from the delicious red raspberries, right through to the early sprouting potatoes.

And one of my most favourites of all times, the broad bean. I took a look at them only a day or so ago, and thought to myself that they were nearly ready to pick. Looking at them again today – they were sprouting out all over the place! I can only just imagine the delicious healthy dishes I am going to be putting together.

It was great when I had an allotment in Plymouth, there were a lot of good advice and helpful suggestions from my neighbours.  Several of them were very generous with any extra supplies they had. I never went home empty handed, even if there was nothing on my own plot to pick, there was always someone giving surplus away.

I do miss my allotment, and my Plymouth gardening friends. But I am managing ok here on Dartmoor. It is a very different experience, and I have had to adjust.

Picking the crop is a great way to end a day in the office. Having a basketful of goodies on your arm, and especially ones you have grown yourself, is a great feeling. Feeling the heat of the sun beating down, and imagining the anticipation of early evening time, gin and tonics on the horizon. No more work to do, not until tomorrow anyway.

It’s even better if you have a little helper with you. What a great way to train up the little ones, letting them sample the fruits of the soil whilst selecting the ones they want to take home.

Our lettuces have grown to fruition, our beetroots are glorious, and the courgettes are coming along very nicely. Even the tomatoes seem to be behaving themselves this year, and that will be a first for me.

What about you, what is your favourite fruit or veg to grow? Or favourites, should I say? I would love to hear from you, and would appreciate any tips and advice.
