The Ocean City Blues N Jazz Festival by Carole Langman

Summer Festivals in Devon

Summer is a great time for Festivals, especially this year, with its wonderful sunny days. We’ve had great weather for weeks, upon weeks.  In some ways I had thought it was never going to rain again, and then…  it did. And it decided to pour down on the weekend of the Ocean City Blues N Jazz Festival in Plymouth.

Ocean City Blues N Jazz Festival

This popular festival returned for a third year to the Barbican, on 10 – 12 August. It was sponsored by Rowes Honda. I wondered what the cars were doing there! The Parade was full of sounds of blues and jazz over the three days, with music performing on stage from midday each day.  We managed to catch the Friday and Saturday, but unfortunately had to leave Plymouth for sunny Bowerland on the Sunday.

The event was free to attend. And we enjoyed what we saw and heard as we passed by on our way to The Dolphin, a favourite haunt of ours. We were meeting up with some old friends, and some younger family members, to enjoy a drink and a bite to eat to follow. It was a real treat to come upon this great music, and wonderful atmosphere, whilst walking along the old cobbled streets.

Plymouth Barbican

I do love the Barbican, so full of history and atmosphere. And it was a perfect setting for the Festival, right by the water’s edge. Everyone was happy, despite the rain. There were plenty of places to shelter. The pubs were busy (as usual) and the restaurants full. All in all, a great way to spend an evening or two. Look out for it next year, or a Festival close by where you live. These type of events really do lift the spirit and take you out of your normal lives for a few hours. You never know who you are going to bump into!
