Summer Days at Bowerland
What beautiful weather we are having at Bowerland this year – a glorious summer so far! When the weather is so very good, it just draws you outside, into your outside space. With plants galore to look at, bursting out all over the place with their bright colours, and foliage so green and vibrant. June and July, the early days of summer, is a wonderful time of year.
We are so very lucky here at Bowerland. There are so many garden areas to look at and admire. Each of our two cottages have their own private garden space and on a Friday it is a hive of activity, both with the cottage change overs, and in the garden. Dead-heading, and tidying up the huge amount of growth that seems to be taking place. And not forgetting the watering. So important at this time of year. In fact I don’t think I have ever watered quite as much as I am having to do this year.
The container plants need special attention, so this week we decided to have a good clean up and change around. We emptied out the existing plants and earth, and recycled them to other areas, towards the back of my main garden. There are so many places to plant! We then started again with the containers in the cottage gardens. First of all filling them with the ‘roughage’ – we used stones as we seem to have so many lying around! Then the good top soil, of which we also have an abundance. On top of that we mixed in some lovely mature manure, and then the final layer of some very good garden compost. The very last job, and the one that gives the most effect, is of course deciding where to place the new plants.
Everything is growing like wildfire here. The grass seems to grow overnight, and needs constant cutting. The flowers are blooming like never before! The roses in particular in the Annexe are excelling themselves, and reaching right up to the sky. So much so, that I have decided to add yet another rose bush alongside them, just to fill a little gap as you do! I hope within a few short weeks I will be posting a picture of the new rose bush in flower.
Take a look at what we did. What do you think? Do you approve? I am always happy to receive your thoughts and tips on what you do, and any ideas for improvements. After all, I am not really a gardener, it is just a hobby of mine!
