Okehampton Castle

Have you heard the story about the ghost of Okehampton Castle? Well take a read below.

The ghost of Lady Howard haunts Okehampton Castle and the legend goes that at midnight every night she travels from Okehampton to Tavistock in the form of black dog, having taken a blade of grass from the castle grounds. The dog runs alongside a coach made from the bones of her dead husbands and only when Lady Howard has removed every single blade of grass from the castle, will her spirit find peace.

After the last Courtenay owner fell foul of Henry VIII in 1538, the Castle declined into an, allegedly, haunted ruin. Take an audio tour around the site and hear tales of a bygone age as you explore the former home of one of Devon’s most powerful families.
