Bowerman’s Nose

Have you heard the story about Bowerman’s nose? It is a well know Dartmoor landmark. It is an oddly shaped granite stack near Manaton, and has a few mythical tales surrounding it.

The most popular myth was that Bowerman – a hunter – was in pursuit of a hare one day when he ran through a coven of witches, who became very angry that he’d upset their ritual.

The next time Bowerman went hunting, one of the witches turned herself into a hare and led the hunter on a wild chase all over Dartmoor, until he became exhausted.

The witches subsequently turned Bowerman and his hounds into petrified stone, which then became the rocks you now see at Hound Tor.
