Saturday Stories – Roselle the Hero Dog
This is the incredible true tale of a Labrador retriever named Roselle, whose heroism saved the lives of many people.
Back in 2001 the September 11th tragedy occurred, during which terrorists flew two separate planes into the former World Trade Centre towers which would ultimately collapse and sadly cost 3000 people their lives. Roselle happened to be on the 78th floor of the North Tower at the time, working as a guide dog for her blind owner, Michael. The first plane struck the tower at 8:46am, and whilst others around her started to scream and panic, Roselle kept her cool. Sensing her calmness, Michael allowed himself to be guided by her.
Somehow knowing that the lifts would be out of action, Roselle’s first step was to lead Michael to the building’s stairwell. Never leaving Michael’s side, she guided him down 10 floors, until they had to pause due to dangerous fumes from the crashed plane’s fuel and overcrowding. At this point they passed a hysterical woman who was frantically yelling. Despite Michael’s reliance on her Roselle knew the woman needed her help , and took the time to nudge her with her muzzle until the woman petted her, helping calm her down.
Roselle continued on guiding Michael down the stairs, even taking the time to allow the firemen heading up the stairs pet her (which would sadly be the last kind of interaction many of the fireman would ever have as the tower later collapsed with them inside). When they eventually made it outside the tower Mike thought the ordeal was finally over. Roselle however knew better, and was quick to react and pull Michael away further once she sensed the tower was about to collapse.
Because of Roselle’s efforts both her and her owner Michael escaped with their lives and were able to continue living their happy life together. Considering she never abandoned her owner and friend, I hope you’ll agree the sense of duty and loyalty shown by Roselle is heroic.
