Norwegian Horses Communicate with Humans by Chris Green

Anyone who has ever owned or worked with horses can tell you how intelligent they are, and in fact they can often understand what we humans want. Now, we might be able to do the same for them. This week’s true animal story features some Norwegian researchers who have taught 23 of their horses to communicate – expressing their needs using a series of picture boards.

Blanket On, Blanket Off

The team started by training the horses for 10-15 minutes a day and focusing on just 3 symbols – ‘blanket on’, ‘blanket off’ or ‘no change.’

After 11 days all 23 horses understood the meaning of these symbols and could use them to let their researchers know when they wanted their blanket taken off or put back on. To prove the choices made were not purely random, the horses were tested in different weather conditions. In warm weather, the horses chose to stay without a blanket, and in cold, wet or windy weather they chose to have it on.

The Horses loved it!

After the horses realised they could express themselves in this way, they loved it! Many became eager in the training and testing environment to express their desires.

It just goes to show what you can achieve if you put in the effort with your pets. The same is true for you and your dog. If you are experiencing any training issues then we can help! Give us a call on 07717 696623 or drop us an email via [email protected] to discuss any sort of training.
