Stress – how to recognise the signs!

Stress is a very natural part of everyday life. Some stress is even considered good for you, and can keep you motivated and on top of things. But there are certain signs to watch out for when stress tips over into an unhealthy state. For some of us it could be pressures at work, or moving home. Or it could be as a result of actions from others towards you, such as a loss or break-up with a loved one, or a difficult relationship with your neighbours, or even experiencing aggression towards you. Something that threatens your peace of mind, your security and safety.

We need to find ways to manage these stressful occasions, and to deal with the stress effectively. We need to bring down our levels of stress to ensure they do not become overwhelming, potentially leading to a burn out, or break down.

One of the first things to do is to recognise the signs. There are 3 key indicators that something is not right, and if we can step in at this point and help ourselves and others better manage stress, we can help to avoid it getting any worse. These signs are:

  1. Not sleeping well – either not being able to get off to sleep, or waking in the night
  2. No tolerance, short temper – being impatient with yourself and others
  3. Lack of motivation, focus, low energy – not being able to complete even the most simplest of jobs, feeling overwhelmed with life in general

These are 3 common signs that a break down, or burn out is imminent. Next week we will look at better ways of dealing with stress, keeping on top of anxieties and problems, and helping ourselves to find a balance that works for us as individuals.
