Self Compassion – or more commonly known as looking after yourself!

We’ve talked before about ways in which we can nurture and value ourselves, and it all sounded so simple and easy to do. But, as I have now realised, this isn’t something that you just do once or twice and that is it – sorted. You need to be consciously caring for yourself throughout your life. To some people it comes more naturally than to others. Perhaps they were fortunate enough to have been brought up in a family unit where love and compassion was the normal way of being. For others it is more difficult. Perhaps they were brought up in an environment where they had to please others. They may have been told not to put themselves first in any way. These people may even have been told that it was ‘selfish’ to consider putting their needs first before others.

Situations occur from time to time that absolutely shake you up and affect your sense of stability. And it is at these times of pressure and stress that it is even more important to care for yourself. When we feel vulnerable we need love and care. Who can provide this in just the right quantity and depth, than ourselves. After all, we know ourselves so well. But do we always remember to do it?  If it was our best friend, or our partner in life, we would be the first to offer love and care and enfold them in a blanket of comfort.  We need to remember to do this for ourselves.

Just  imagine your loving arms around yourself, imagine the light of love and compassion coming through to you. Sit yourself down and close your eyes and visualise the warmth of human kindness entering into your body, through the top of your head, down to the soles of your feet. Be kind to yourself, rest up, eat good food, and make sure you relax in the most comfortable place you can be in.  It will work, as long as you remember to put yourself first.

I hope you find these thoughts helpful. I would love to hear what you think about my ideas, and anything else you have come up with. Tell me what you think by posting your comments below.
