listsLast Monday we talked about self-care and taking time out for yourself as a way of feeling motivated. This week I want to look at how important it is to prioritise the time you have set aside for yourself.  How do you decide what is best for you to spend your precious time on? Personally, the way I prioritise is by writing lists. I find it very satisfying to have a clean page in front of me, pen poised, ready to begin!

So, what to write on your lists?  How to get motivated? Here are some ideas:

  • Things I love to do
  • People I like to spend time with
  • Places I want to visit

Whatever you choose to list, this exercise is about getting you to dig deeply, and to try to make sense of how you feel, as well as forcing you to be truthful and honest. This in turn will help you to decide on how to spend your time. Therefore make sure you write down what you like doing, what you don’t like doing.  Also what makes you happy/unhappy, etc.

The next step is to prioritise from within these lists.  Either in the short term, (within the week/month) or longer term (the next 1-5 years).  For example, I want to plan for the next phase of my life, which I will call my retirement phase, so I will use the longer term.  I want to plan for the next phase, rather than trip over it.  I don’t want to stumble on, doing the same things in the same way. Or to wonder where the time has gone and still not doing what I really want to do.

With your lists, put each item in order of importance to you, then pick out all the 1s, 2s and 3s, discarding the rest.  You now have a good idea on what is important for you and how you want to spend your future time, be it in the short term, or in a longer period.

Next week, with your lists in place, we are going to look at some ideas on treating yourself, some of which you might not even have thought of yet.

I would love to hear what you think about my ideas, and anything else you have come up with. Tell me what you think by posting your comments below. Why don’t you Share this with your friends and family by clicking the Facebook icon?
