Both Sides of Life – Light/Dark, Good/Bad, Positive/Negative

Call it what you like, choose the particular form of words that apply to you, but I strongly believe that our lives are made up of both lightness and darkness. Even though we think we want life to always be a bed of roses, full of good times, laughter and joy. In actual reality we would probably become bored and complacent in time. We need some darkness in our lives – it can’t all be light. There needs to be a balance, like in most things.

So, we all have a fixed idea of how life should be. Yet sometimes life throws us a curved ball. Just when we were beginning to settle into a period of calmness and contentedness, along comes something to spoil it. I call these the dark moments. When the unexpected happens, and particularly when it is in a negative context. What do you do at these times? How do you manage them?

In previous weeks we looked at gratitude and how it brings a sense of value and appreciation back into our lives. This week I want to focus on how we can turn our negatives, our dark times, into positives and good times. If I look back on periods of my life, even through the darker times, there has always been something, or someone that steps up to the mark. That has helped to change my life for the better. Just when I needed them. How about you?

For me it is always about how I look at things, my attitude to what is happening. I can easily get drawn into a downward spiral of feeling sorry for myself, the “woe is me” attitude which springs to the surface. This is the time that it is important to focus on turning the negative into a positive. Instead of just concentrating on the negative, the dark, the bad occasion or incident, think of something good instead. It is surprising how things can be turned around.

One way I do this is by using a journal, and in particular, a gratitude journal. Be grateful for all the good things that you come across, each and every day. And when you are stopped in your tracks by something you perceive as being negative, think about how you can turn it into a positive. There is always another angle, another side to the situation. There is always another path you can take, you just need to be imaginative and creative.

Give it a go, and see how you get on. Value the dark and light in your life, turn your negatives into positives, review how you perceive the situation. Talk it through with a trusted friend or partner, it is surprising what you can come up with, what you can change.

I hope you find these tips and thoughts helpful. I would love to hear what you think about my ideas, and anything else you have come up with. Tell me what you think by posting your comments below.
