How does your day start? Do you start each day with a clean slate ready to face whatever challenges arise? Are you mindful, clear and focussed?
If you’re anything like me, you hurtle out of bed with your mind on a million things, trip over the cat or dog —and sometimes even both of them — all whilst trying to make breakfast, answering the phone and seeing who is at the door. And all of this before 9.00 am!
Having said that, everything is changing in my life by making a conscious effort to take part in a mindfulness programme. I do my best to begin each day with a short meditation. Looking inward, I focus on myself and my life. I try to begin each day with a period of calm meditation and often bring my mind back to this calmness throughout the day.
When I skip this for any reason, I notice a big difference! Some meditation techniques advise that stress release often takes the form of thought. So even within meditation itself, instead of resisting thoughts that arise, I learn how to relax, observe and sink deeper into the silence. Simply put, it is like being okay with whatever happens, which in turn releases self-judgement.
As MSI said: “From the solid platform of our true nature, we begin to witness the thoughts in our mind…”
As one moves gently inward, several remarkable things begin to happen. First, the body settles down to very deep rest, deeper than that of sleep at night. This allows deep stresses and strains to be released from the physiology. Second, the mind starts erasing the old grooves of doubt, of limitation, of fear, of self-destructive behaviour patterns. This is true because the inward movement of the mind takes one to greater levels of subtlety that automatically start erasing the boundaries of limits. Third, joy and peace start spontaneously developing in the life, freeing one’s heart from the painful shrouds of past experience. Life begins to be lived in innocence and unconditional love.
I would love to hear whatever practice you use that keeps you calm and focussed. Share this with your friends and family by clicking the Facebook icon and following us on Twitter.
