Luna – Lost at Sea for 5 weeks!

This week we have a true story of courage and determinism from 2016 starring Luna – a one-year-old German Shepherd/Siberian Husky mix.

Nick suddenly realised Luna wasn’t on the boat

As she had many times before, Luna was out on a fishing trip with her owner, Nick. At some point during their trip, miles away from land, Nick suddenly realised Luna was nowhere to be seen on the boat. Immediately fearing the worst he called the authorities to report her and a mass search was started. Nick’s main worry was that she would be swept out further into the Pacific ocean and not be able to make it back.

Last sighted near San Clemente Island

The last sighting of Luna was about two miles away from San Clemente island, home to a U.S. naval facility. Nick knew that she was a strong swimmer and would head towards land, so asked the authorities and staff from the facility to help him search the island. Sadly they weren’t successful, and after a week the searching was called off and poor Luna presumed dead. Nick was forced to go home without her and try to move on, even posting a ‘RIP’ message on Facebook.

Found – Five Weeks Later

Five long and horrible weeks passed for Nick, before he suddenly got a call from the authorities that Luna had been located! She had been found sitting at the side of a road and wagging her tail by members of the naval base on their way to work! As there are no domesticated animals on the island, it was certainly a bit of shock for them.

She was found only slightly malnourished, with the authorities presuming she’d survived by eating mice on the island. Happy to be rescued, Luna immediately jumped into the car when instructed to, where she was quickly brought home and reunited with her much-relieved owner Nick.
