Summer is really here – Hanging Baskets time

When has Summer arrived for you – what are your tell-tale signs? Is it the early morning sun waking you, the warmer weather from dawn to dusk, or something else, like putting away your winter clothes? For me it is hanging up the flowering baskets.

And the time has come, the baskets have been chosen, and this year we seem to need a lot more to make Bowerland even more brighter and colourful than ever!  Perhaps it is something to do with the outside building works that we have been busy on so far this year. Or maybe it is just that we have a lot of space to fill. But the hanging baskets certainly seem to bring a boost to the overall look with their instant and beautiful array of blooms and foliage.

This year we have found a new, very unique small nursery outlet in Brixton, Plymouth called Fordbrook. I have visited this wonderful nursery a few times over the last 6 months, with my very good friend Louise, and the very last time I was there, they were making up their hanging flower baskets. They looked magnificent.

I had no hesitation in choosing to purchase my baskets from this family run business. It is a wonderful place that really do specialise in quality plants, and where the prices are very affordable. Last weekend Louise and I turned up with some ideas on what to buy, and a list in hand, ready to choose from the great selection that was there. I also wanted to purchase a number of plants to fill up the new troughs and wooden barrels we have just bought. And the containers we bought are big, especially the troughs.

We had a delightful time picking and choosing our very favourite hardy, and semi-hardy plants, with a view to colour, foliage and of course not forgetting, smell. I was lucky with the hanging baskets, they didn’t have a huge amount left, and weren’t going to be making up many more this year.  There were just enough to satisfy my needs! And they certainly had plenty of other plants, in fact we bought so much that we couldn’t fit everything in the car, and had to come back the next day with the van for the hanging baskets.

The drive home to Bowerland was wonderful, all we could smell was the fragrance coming from the many plants in the back.  We just about managed to get them all in! And what fun I am having now in choosing which plants to place in what container.  The hanging baskets of course are up already and made an instant show of beautiful flowers. All that is left to do is to make sure they are watered and dead-headed, everything else has been done.  It’s as easy as that!

Next year I will be sure to order my baskets up early, well before I need them, just to make sure.
