Saltram House – near Plymouth
Saltram is one of my most favourite places to visit. When our family lived in Plymouth, we walked the circular walk most weekends with our lovely collie dog, Bella. And to visit the house and gardens was a real treat – somewhere you always brought your guests and visitors to. You can take a lovely walk around the house and grounds, visit the cafe, as well as the House itself.
Saltram is a great day out for the family, with lots of events and activities on offer. The house itself is lovely, and was home to the Parker family for generations. The National Trust took it over in 1957 and opened it up to the Public. The grounds themselves are stunning with some fantastic and unusual plants and shrubs. No matter what the season, you will always find something to admire here. From the Orange Grove to the Summer Border, there are plants to see and smell.
The Orangery Cafe is a great place for a pit stop, providing a welcome sit down with tea and cakes, no matter what time of day it is. You can purchase some lovely plants from the Stables Courtyard, or visit the shop for those extra little gifts. You can even pick up a great second hand book as well, there are lots to browse through.
We have also seen some lovely art exhibitions there, including many artists that I wish I had purchased at the time. One in particular sticks in my mind. A lady artist that painted some wonderful pictures of rooms with windows and views. It was awhile ago now, I wish I could remember her name.
