Whilst you are here on a holiday with your dog, make sure you visit some of our favourite places nearby in North Dartmoor. If you are having a programme of dog training, there should be some time where you can fit in a trip or two. After all, it is not just about your dog, a little treat for you once or twice wouldn’t go amiss!

  1. Lydford – A secluded village that dates back to the late 9th century. The village is dominated by the castle which dates back to 1195. Take a trip to Lydford Gorge, an exhilarating walk, slightly steep and can be slippery in wet weather. Great place to stop for afternoon tea. If you have time, an evening meal at the Castle Inn will provide the perfect ending for the day.
  2. Hatherleigh – Visit the local market on a Tuesday morning where farmers have gathered to buy and sell their livestock for generations.  There are stalls selling local bread, meat, and plenty of fantastic plants.
  3. Belstone – This is a pretty village, near open moorland. Great walks, including the Nine Maidens prehistoric stone circle. Make sure you take a pit stop at the Tors for lunch and sit on the tables and benches outside. The views are stunning.
  4. Sticklepath – Our favourite pub of all is at Sticklepath. The Taw River (but we call it pie pub)! Really good value meals and a friendly landlord. Book a table to eat in the bar, you will be spoilt for choice! Also visit the working museum at Finch Foundry if you have time.
  5. Meldon -A small village close to Okehampton, with several small granite quarries located nearby. The Granite Way cycle track between Okehampton and Lydford crosses the Meldon viaduct and is simply stunning. Take a walk around Meldon Reservoir, a spectacular dam with stupendous views over Dartmoor, is also really worth taking some time to explore.
