Have you visited Dartmoor Zoo, on the outskirts of Plymouth, yet?  You may have heard of the story behind the Zoo and the book,’We Bought A Zoo’ by Benjamin Mee, which is a fascinating story about how the family came to be there. There has even been a film made about it, with the same name, starring Matt Damon and Scarlett Johansson.

Dartmoor Zoo is not the biggest zoo you will have visited, but it is very friendly. Whilst it’s relatively small, the zoo is packed with some extraordinary animals. These range from tigers to lions, and from wolves to bears. You should also be able to see cheetah, jaguar, lynx and foxes. There’s even an area that is dedicated to birds of prey with some open spaces in which to watch displays.

The zoo also has a fine collection of owls. Try to be there for the great talks and to watch the feeding times. Being that close to the big cats being fed is a worthwhile experience. Kids love it there. They can visit the fenced section which enables them to really get up close to goats, chickens and ducks. There is also a play area for them as well.

You will be able to stop for refreshments, and of course a visit to the gift shop.
