Castle Drogo: This is one of our favourite places to visit. You will find a wonderful country house and castle to while away the hours, as well as exercising yourself and your dog on some really great walks. Dramatically situated above the Teign Gorge and perched up high on the northern slopes of Dartmoor, it is one of the region’s most popular National Trust properties to visit. The castle is a granite fortress and is well known as being ‘the last castle to be built in England’.
The Edwardian building was designed by Edwin Lutyens, Britain’s greatest 20th century architect, and has many lovely rooms to look at. Although at the moment Castle Drogo is currently undergoing a 5-year project to make it watertight – which is about half way through, it is still well worth a visit!
The gardens are stunning, filled with Rhododendrons and Magnolias, and there are project tours which give an insight into the current building work and go into the chapel. You can explore the Teign Gorge from below the Castle, and get a chance to see a vibrant tapestry by artist Grayson Perry, created for his popular Tomb of the Unknown Craftsman exhibition at The British Museum.
