The Garden House at Buckland Monachorum is a wonderful place to visit, take inspiration from, and soak up the amazing atmosphere. The garden (or series of gardens) stretch for some 10 miles and are a joy to see. You can while away many pleasant hours here.

Situated close to Yelverton, Devon, and within a reasonable drive if you are staying with us at Bowerland Holiday Cottages, it is easy to locate.

On arrival, wend your way through the series of gardens, along pleasant wide pathways that lead you through them all.  You will be spoilt for choice. There are plenty of stopping places to enable you to enjoy the wonderful views. Some of my favourite parts are the two-acre walled garden that surrounds the old ruins of Buckland’s medieval vicarage. Equally, I really love the colourful summer garden that is planted in the Dutch, naturalistic style.

The cottage garden has been tended by the same gardener for over twenty years and it is a feast for the senses from mid spring. A favourite spot to sit is an oak bench within dry stone walls, hidden amongst thousands of cottage flowers.

In late May the patio is drenched in wisteria and the scent fills the tea rooms. The patio is a special place to sit and take in the garden, and you can enjoy a delicious slice of homemade cake or even linger over a tasty lunch. Equally, the two-acre arboretum with lake and ornamental bridges makes a lovely spot for a picnic.

If you visit in late autumn the Acer glade is magnificent. You will see acres of all colours, reds, gold, oranges and crimsons that are simply breath-taking. Once you have seen them you will want to come back, year after year to enjoy the sight.  At the other end of the garden, the arboretum and lake are very picturesque especially on sunny autumn days.

The gardens also host a range of events across the year from gardening courses to watercolour painting classes. So if you are a budding artist, this would be perfect for you! Check out their website for more information.
