Favourite Clothes – My First Pair of Levis
Throughout the years I have had several favourite items of clothing which I have really loved. But my memory takes me way back, back to the early days of fashion for me. It all started with my very first pair of Levis, back in the late sixties. This was my first real crush. Levis were all the rage at the time, everyone, just everyone, wanted a pair. The classic ones were a proper dark blue denim, stiff as a board, shaped primarily for men and a definite fashion statement.
I desperately wanted a pair and after months of pestering and persuading I finally got my way. Back in those days, before I earnt my own money, it wasn’t easy to obtain anything that wasn’t necessary, sensible, or functional. Especially in some family situations, mine included. But these Levis just shouted out to me. There was no option, I simply had to have them!
I can still remember the excitement of the purchase, from JC’s (John Conways), the shop that specialised in all types of jeans in Plymouth City Centre. The surge of adrenalin, the sheer pleasure of walking out of the shop and at last owning my very own pair of Levis. I couldn’t wait to get home and sit in a bath full of cold water to ‘set’ the jeans and make them personal. It probably sounds a bit mad but that was the only way you could personalise your jeans. Whether or not it worked, that was beside the point, everyone followed the fashion rules when they first purchased their jeans.
The feeling of getting out of the bath wearing the cold, stiff denims and having to dry off before you eventually took them off, was indescribable. To this day I hate wearing wet clothes, and I guess it probably stems from this mad behaviour that was considered the thing to do at the time. Lying in the cold bath, fully clothed was a memory that will stay with me for ever.
But I loved those jeans so much. Eventually they softened up a bit, and became more comfortable to wear and they lasted years and years. They were patched up when the material got thin in places, there was no way you showed your skin through the material. That was not the look you wanted. What fantastic jeans they were. I still have very fond memories of those Levis, they were a really great purchase, I think I wore them almost every day for several years!
