Finn – Friends for Life Crufts 2019

At Bowerland and Devon Dogs we are very pleased to see that Finn received this award, we all strive for the best relationship with our dogs and this story is one of true devotion. Finn, a retired Hertfordshire Police dog, and his owner PC Dave Wardell were awarded a top honour at Crufts last weekend. They were announced as the Kennel Club Friends for life winners!!!

In the line of Duty

Finn was stabbed multiple times as he tried to protect Dave from an armed attack in Stevenage back in 2016. This tragic event sparked the “Finn Laws Campaign” calling for better protection for all service animals.

Friends for Life Award

Finn was beyond brave and courageous and was one of the five hero dogs shortlisted for Friends for Life – Crufts 2019. Dave shared Finn’s story, along with 4 others; after which the UK voted for their favourite hero. On the final day of Crufts, The results were announced by hero soldier, Ben Parkinson. Dave and Finn were awarded a £5000 cheque to go to the charity of their choice.

Speaking about their win, Dave said:

“I can’t believe it. I feel so emotional. Just by being here, we had won already. It has been a culmination of years of campaigning to get Finn’s story heard. I am so grateful to the Kennel Club Charitable Trust for the prize money, which we’re going to donate to German Shepherd Rescue Elite.”

Caroline Kisko, the Kennel Club Secretary, said: “We congratulate Dave and Finn on winning this year’s Friends for Life award; their story is incredibly moving and highlights what wonderfully loyal and brave companions our four-legged friends are. They are truly man’s best friend.

Lifetime Bonds

Each and every one of the dogs in the final helped to transform their owner’s lives, showing unwavering devotion and companionship. They are a great example of the positive difference that dogs can make. They are all winners and their bonds will last a lifetime. Dave has also co-written a book with Lynne Barrett-Lee called Fabulous Finn. Available in Kindle, Hardcover and Paperback.
