What’s your Favourite Season?
What’s your favourite season? Is it Summer? Thinking about the long school holidays, the warm weather, the hours of sunlight? Time to relax, and to take some time out for yourself from the usual routine? We’ve certainly had a good summer so far this year. Weeks of fantastic weather, stretching from as early as April right through to July and beyond. A guarantee of long warm days, which is certainly a help for planning days out on the beach. And there are plenty of Garden fetes, Craft fairs, and even school sports days – plenty for us all do to.
The type of summer we have had so far is kinda unusual if you think about it. Many of us that live in Britain have experienced a very different type of summer weather, and many times year after year. We have got used to our chequered weather, never quite knowing what to expect. We plan for all weathers, and expect the worse, and what a surprise it has been to have days, weeks, even months of lovely sun so far this year.
And as lovely as it has been to see the sun almost every day, for hours and hours at a time. I sort of miss the rain in a funny sort of way. The rain cools down the earth, and feeds the plants and wildlife. Everywhere has begun to take on that parched dry and dusty look. When I walk over our fields here at Bowerland it is rough and uncomfortable, dry and full of stubble. Not something you would want to do in your bare feet. And of course, the colours of nature have changed. Everything is looking washed out and faded, unlike the bright vibrant colours we have come to expect.
It isn’t the same is it – experiencing this lovely weather in the UK? It’s not the same as when you holiday abroad. Unless you are very fortunate and either work in an air conditioned office, or outside where there is shade, it is decidedly uncomfortable working in this temperature. Perhaps we need to imitate our European neighbours and take a siesta in the afternoons? Close down shop, rest up in the drowsy heat of the sun, refreshed and ready to open up again in the evening.
An afternoon snooze in the heat of the day, mmm – that’s a thought. But what about a nice refreshing dip in the pool to cool you down? Well, unless you live close to a great outside pool, that is not going to happen! And whilst I don’t wish to go back to the days of sitting at the beach under an umbrella, I am finding it all a bit too hot for me. Enjoy it while you can though, Summer 2018 will be a season to remember.
What about you – do you have a favourite time of year? I would love to hear from you…
