Friday Favourites – What’s your Favourite Dog Breed?
Many dog owners have a favourite breed of dog that they feel most attached to. At Bowerland Cottages and Devon Dogs we’re lucky enough to see a large variety of breeds of come in – whether they’re staying with their owners in our fabulous holiday cottages or here for training.
My favourite breed of dog is St Bernard. They appeal to me because they are large dogs, and as a 6.5 foot man I feel we match together. I see them as one of the friendliest, most loyal breed of dogs (I admit this view may be influenced by the ‘Beethoven’ movies).
If you’ve read some of my Saturday Stories posts then you may have seen a couple about Ben the St Bernard – Ben was owned by my family when I was much younger. I only have a few memories of him, but I remember him fondly as a loyal and protective dog. At the time we owned a hotel near Ashburton and he loved walking around the bar area receiving attention from everyone.
St Bernards were originally bred as search and rescue dogs, used to locate and rescue stranded people on mountains. They were well suited to this task due to their strong sense of smell, thick fur to keep warm and size and power to make it through the snow. St Bernards would often work in pairs so that if they found someone stranded one could stay and help (and keep the person warm if needed) whilst the other ran off for help.
What about you, do you have a favourite breed of dog? I would love to hear from you. Post your comments below. Why don’t you share this with your friends and family by clicking the Facebook icon? Or try following us on Twitter?
