Easy Steps to Contentment!
Are you happy with your lot? Do you feel grateful for the simple things in your life? If you’re anything like me you enjoy the quiet times, such as settling down with a good book, or meeting a friend for coffee etc. These times are priceless. It’s times like this that give me contentment, a feeling of security and comfort and that all important feel good feeling.
The Simple Things
These simple pleasures help me to appreciate what I have, rather than yearning for the things that I don’t have. It is true, the simple things in life tend to give us the most joy. And we don’t need to have oodles of money, nor live in a mansion to enjoy most of these simple pleasures.
How about you? What are the things that give you contentment? Are any of these familiar to you? For example I really enjoy spending time with people I love and admire. I also enjoy great food and a good bottle of wine, and of course the love of an animal. These things matter above everything else. It all boils down to the simple pleasures of hearth and home; to have a loving family all around me, and to appreciate the beautiful area of Devon in which I live.
Taking your Dog for a Walk
Hanging out with friends, taking your dog for a walk in the park, or, if you are lucky enough, by the sea. Lighting a cosy fire, relaxing in front of the TV, all these things give so much pleasure yet are really very simple and straightforward… and needn’t cost too much.
Focus on your blessings
Rather than thinking about what is missing from your life, perhaps try to acknowledge the little things that are already there that make you happy. It could be the love of your partner, your children, your grandchildren. Simple times such as sharing a good meal, catching up on all the latest news, and seeing them blossom over the years. Feeling glad that they are well adjusted, loving and caring individuals that you have helped to shape and develop through the years.
Gratitude – an Antidote for Worry
We all have so much to be grateful for, and I believe that the more you recognise what you already have, the happier and more content you feel. Honestly – go on, try it for yourself. The next time you are feeling a bit low, a bit left out, stop what you are doing and think about it.
Write it down
Take a few minutes out of your busy day to list down the things that spring to mind, the things that make you happy. List down the things that you are grateful for. You’ll be surprised at how much better you feel just by remembering these simple things.
