Do you write? for yourself or with others in mind?  Do you dabble with words and would like to link up with other like-minded people? Have you ever thought of joining a Writing Group?

I have always enjoyed writing, everything about it, getting organised, and making a plan of what I wanted to write about.  Even things like all the stationery paraphernalia, notebooks, pens, etc fill me with joy!  Up until a couple of years ago I mostly wrote formal-type offerings, and mostly in a work environment. I found it pretty easy to form sentences that seemed to get the point across, and at the same time, felt quite interesting to read as well as informative. But I had never written any fiction, it was all factual stuff.

A great friend of mine suggested joining a weekend course, which married up writing with self-growth and that was really the start of it for me.  As part of the course, we were asked to write out some intentions of what we aimed for in the coming year, and one of our intentions was to put together a creative writing group.  This is what we did, and I have continued to write since then, both as part of a writing group, but also by myself as well.  This last year our writing group have taken part in a therapeutic journey of our memoirs, along the lines of the heroic journey.  It has been an enlightening year, but I am ready now to go back to fiction.

If you fancy linking up with others, you will be able to find a group to join. You may want to try out a few first, before you decide which group suits you. You may not want to travel too far, it can become too cumbersome, and an excuse to drop out further down the line. Think also about the level of the group, are they made up of published authors, or people just starting out. It is important that you gain your confidence in a group that matches your level of writing, especially when you start off.

Another model of group writing, is to join an online writing group. It is well worth a try, and could be just the way-in that you are looking for. Anything  to encourage your writing, you just need to make a start. Once you have started, you will find it very addictive. There are loads of books and articles to help, you are not alone. Go on, why don’t you give it a try?
