You have made your decision – an important first step on your creative writing journey. You are raring to give it a go and ready to dabble in some form or other of creative writing. What interests you?  Are you looking to write a novel, a short story, a poem, or some prose?  You may even want to write for personal gain, such as your memoirs, this can be very therapeutic.

I would class creative writing as any writing at all, which is written with imagination. For me that mostly means fiction, or writing to express an emotion, a feeling or a thought. There are many books that can help, there are a load of people that will give you their opinion, but the most important thing is to actually start writing. Once you have sorted out the details, the next dilemma you face is how to get started!  Here are my top tips to get you going:

  1. Write something every day and get into your own routine of writing that suits you.
  2. Keep a notebook with you wherever you go, and jot down anything that sparks your imagination.
  3. Gather stories from whoever you talk to.
  4. Read extensively.
  5. Join a Writing Group near you, or an online group.

And most of all, give yourself permission to experiment, to see what works for you.
