Coleton Fishacre – A Wonderful Place To Visit with your dogs
If you haven’t been to Coleton Fishacre in Kingswear before, you really must visit. Make sure you leave plenty of time to treat yourself in the shop, and of course, to enjoy something to eat and drink in the cafe. Dogs are welcome in the gardens, and the outside tables in the cafe, as long as you keep them on leads! The off season months are open from 10.30am to 5.00pm most days.
The land was originally purchased by Rupert and Lady Dorothy D’Oyle Carte in 1923 in order to build themselves a holiday home. The house was completed in June 1926. It is commonly known as an Art Deco paradise and has been owned by the National Trust since 1982.
The house itself is a wonderful art deco building with lovely interiors. You feel that you have travelled back in time to the Jazz age. It is of minimalist design, with pale walls and strong accent colours. As you walk through the house you can listen to music playing, and imagine what it was like in those times gone by.
The gardens are also fantastic, with plants from across the world, even as far as New Zealand. There is about 30 acres in all. Make sure you give yourself plenty of time to explore the gardens. You will be able to go on some great walks – you can even get to the coast where you will see some stunning views of the sea.
