Saturday Stories – Chester the Desperate Dog
This week’s true Saturday dog story stars Chester, a pitbull. Back in 2015, he had spent over 5 years living in a animal rescue shelter in New York. Despite being a lovely dog with a great personality, he couldn’t find a family to adopt him. In a last act of desperation, the staff of the shelter decided to use an unorthodox approach to helping him by placing a photo of him holding a heartbreaking sign onto their Facebook page.
The sign read: “Why doesn’t anybody want me? I’ve been waiting 5 years. Everyone at the shelter tells me what a good boy I am. So why has no one adopted me? I promise to be good and love my new family. Please maybe you are my new family… I sit and wait for you to come. Chester”
Thankfully for him, the picture very quickly went viral and had soon been shared over 20,000 times. A Facebook page dedicated to getting Chester adopted soon also appeared.
All this added attention proved successful, with hundreds of people across the country soon phoning into the shelter to enquire about Chester. One of these enquiries was from a family called the Dors, who the staff at the shelter agreed were the perfect match for Chester. Within a few days he was successfully adopted and started his new happy life with his new family. Staff at the shelter believe the reputation associated with Chester’s breed (pitbull) may have been a factor into his long stay before his adoption.
