Bystock Nature Reserve Walk

Bystock is one of the most popular nature reserves in Devon, with beautiful views of the lily-pad filled lake, heathland boardwalks and wildflower meadows. It is slightly longer than our more recent walks at six miles in length and should take you roughly three hours to complete.

To begin, head to the north car park of the Nature Reserve

Head through the gate at the corner of the car park and downhill across the next field to a wooden gate at the bottom. Take the path on the right hand side, turning right and then left onto a boardwalk. Stay on this path as it loops left and uphill, before heading left at the junction. This will take you downhill towards some ponds – follow the boardwalks around them and head straight onto another path. At the next junction turn right over a bridge, through a gate and past the large pool. Follow the boardwalk to a lane.

Once on the lane, turn left and head up to the footpath

From here follow yellow waymarkers down the side of a clearing past Squabmoor Reservoir and all the way to a dam. Follow the waymarkers from here into a wood. Pass through the wood, heading through a metal gate. Keep going straight, then bear right onto a lane at Dalditch Farm. Keep going straight to Brookside Cottage, turning left down a track and then left again onto another track.

After 300 yards on this track head right at the yellow waymarker onto another path

When it forks, take the left path uphill and along the edge of a wood. Once you reach the top keep going straight along a grassy path and into a clearing. Head over a couple of forest tracks until you reach the yellow waymarker, then cross the stile on the left which takes you to a field. Follow the boundary of the field before heading through two gates and a stile at the bottom. Follow the yellow waymarker straight on, heading down a track and then over a couple of stiles and turning left onto a lane.

On this lane head past the free car park and turn right into the village of East Budleigh

Take some time to look around the village or stop for refreshments if desired, before returning to the free car park. Then continue along the lane for 1.5 miles, passing Hayes Barton in the process. Head left at the T-junction, then right at the next junction onto a path, before immediately turning left onto another path. At the next fork go left and keep going for 100 metres before turning up another path on your left. This will take you back to a road that will guide you back to the Bystock Nature Reserve car park you started from.
