Bowerman’s Nose Dartmoor

Bowerman’s Nose is a lovely circular walk taking in Hound’s Tor and the Medieval Village here on Dartmoor. And only 40 minutes from East Bowerland Farm. Here is a link for driving directions – Map.

Directions to Bowerman’s Nose

Start off at Manaton. Park up near the church and head back across the main road. Follow the narrow lane downwards. You will find a path that cuts right over a field in the direction of Hayne Down. Continue along the path and onto the open moors.  You will see the iconic Bowerman’s Nose to the right near the end of the ridge.

Swallerton Gate

At this point make sure you head back to the path that crosses over the ridge. Follow it down to a lane that passes Moorhayes which is marked on the Ordnance Survey Explorer OL28 ‘Dartmoor’ map. Carry on to the left until you reach the road at Hound Tor, which you will find is close to Swallerton Gate. You will enjoy climbing up the granite rocks at Hound Tor – they are easy to climb and the breathtaking views are definitely worth stopping for.

Hound Tor Medieval Settlement

When you have had time to catch your breath, and are ready to go on, continue downwards. You will pass through the historic remains of Hound Tor Medieval Settlement and onto a gateway. At this point the path will descend fairly steeply down towards a clapper bridge and over a brook. This is quite a rocky path, but as long as you take it steady, you will be fine. Continue along bearing left as you come under the slope of Black Hill. You will notice the lovely views of Holwell Tor ahead of you. See if you can spot the granite tramway for the Haytor Quarries.

Carry along the bridle path, to Leighon for a short distance left along the road. You will notice just beyond there is a cottage at the bottom of the hill. Take the path to the right which goes up through bluebell woods and across a pasture to rejoin the lane. Turn right and follow the road through Southcott to Hayne Cross and back to Manaton.
