The Tar Barrels is an incredibly unique traditional event to the town of Ottery St Mary. Huge barrels filled with tar are set on fire, after which local men take it in turns carrying the barrel on their back and running in amongst the crowd. It’s highly dangerous and might seem bizarre, but it’s a lot of fun if you like a little bit of danger.

At midnight everyone gathers in the town centre for the big barrel – not one to be missed!

Aside from the barrels, there’s also a bonfire, fireworks and and fairground rides.
