Baffi on the Annexe Terrace

Baffi’s BOOST Training Holiday by Carole Z.

For several months, my husband Tom and I had been really looking forward to our stay for some boost training with our two-year-old Australian Labradoodle, Baffi. We travelled from our home near Bristol and stayed in the Annexe from 2-6 September.

The Annexe & Local Area

The Annexe is a lovely, cosy place to stay with everything you need, including a delightful enclosed garden. The toy and treats for Baffi and homemade marmalade for us were very well received!

This is a beautiful area and in between our training, we took lovely walks at Roadford Lake and Lydford Gorge, both close by and well worth a visit. There is lots to do in Okehampton, which is an ideal place for visiting Dartmoor. We walked in Simmons Park, which has beautiful gardens and is popular with local dog walkers… such friendly people!

On our last day, we drove over to Bude, one of our favourite places and had some beach fun and canal walk with Baffi.

Baffi’s Boost training

I’d been both excited and nervous about our training, but Michelle quickly put us at ease. We booked the sessions to help improve our understanding of the games and how to use them for maximum success. We covered so much in our 2 sessions, taking away lots of ideas and plans for future training. Michelle was so patient with us, especially as nerves made me confuse my left with my right! Baffi is a super dog, but easily aroused, which makes impulse control a challenge. I’ve worked in the voluntary sector for many years and met several therapy dogs. I would love Baffi to volunteer with me as a PAT dog in the future and the training increased my optimism that we can get there!

Boundary Games

We worked on Boundary games, which I had become frustrated with as we didn’t seem to be moving forward, but thanks to Michelle, I came away with renewed energy to focus on this at Baffi’s pace, not mine. I was rushing him, causing frustration. It was also great for Tom to participate in the games, which until now, he had never really taken on board, so this too has boosted my optimism.

The facilities at Devon Dogs are second to none and we look forward to planning our second visit in 2020. If anyone is thinking of going- do it! You won’t regret it, in fact you’ll love it!

About the Author: My name is Carole Zorzo. Last year I was lucky enough to take early retirement following redundancy from my role with a Charity and Tom is set to follow in 2020. Although we’d always wanted a dog, we’d agreed the time had to be right – so Baffi is our first dog after a 30 year wait and has completely changed our lives for the better! Since we got him I have become really interested in dog training & behaviour, attending quite a few workshops and webinars, I also love volunteering with the Hawk & Owl Trust. We have an amazing local dog trainer, but I’m so grateful to have found Tom, Lauren and Devon Dogs.

Do you have a training issue you want to tackle? Come and stay with us in our cottage style apartments, right in the heart of Dartmoor, and make the most of our fantastic training facilities onsite.
