Wednesday Walks – Walk through Aveton Gifford in South Devon
At a distance of 5.75 miles this is a nice circular walk starting at Aveton Gifford and taking you through the South Hams countryside. You’ll travel thorough paths, green lanes, hills, pasture and woodlands with streams – perfect to take your dog along with you. This walk is within a drive away from us here at Bowerland, so one to bear in mind when you come to stay with us!
You’ll be starting at the Memorial Hall car park in Aveton Gifford. Once you’ve got your dog out of the car and you’re ready to set off, turn left out of the car park entrance. Continue to the T-junction, turning right up Church Lane. Keep going as the path bends left, and then after it bends right take the first track on the left.
You’ll head into a field – cross over it and the stile on the far side. In the next field head to the far corner and bear right. You’ll reach a footbridge and stone stile, both of which you’ll need to cross. On the other side head uphill and to the left of a waymarked fence. At the edge of the next field head to the right and go through a gate and into the bridleway which has blue waymarkers to follow up a hill.
At the top of the hill you’ll need to turn left and follow another bridleway along the edge of some fields and down a rocky green lane. As you reach the front of a farmhouse bear left, then bear right past Chestnut and up another lane towards Lixton. Turn right and bear right again – when you reach Greyhill Cross, take the green lane opposite signed ‘Beer Hill’. When you each the bottom turn left, then right by the bridge into another bridleway taking you through fields and woods.
Just before you reach the house at Idestone bear to the right. Travel up this path for roughly 350m, turning left at the fork and heading through double gates, a field and a stile at the other end. Stick to the edge of the field and follow it until you reach the road, turning left and taking the first left you see up Hoppy Green Lane. When you reach a T-junction head right down the lane and road. You’ll reach a small stream after a while – turn right next to it and onto the public footpath. Head over the field next to you, heading through a cemetery in the process, until you reach a road. Once you reach Tree Corner, turn left into the village and head back to the car park.
