Our Visit to Antony House in Cornwall
Have you been to Antony House? It is a lovely Queen Anne building, on the outskirts of Cornwall, a National Trust property, and still lived in today by the Carew Pole family.
To be honest, we just wanted to take a couple of hours off from the lovely Bowerland, and decided to make the most of our National Trust membership to go out for lunch. We were actually on our way to Cotehele, another National Trust property in Cornwall, but ended up closer to Antony House. The decision was made, and I am glad we did as it was a lovely detour.
On arrival at reception we were allocated a time slot to view the house, and we decided to have lunch first, and then look around. Lunch was more of a snack really than a meal, but that was ok – it kept us going. The tea room was quaint and there were a lot of pictures, and plenty of information to look at whilst we were eating.
The house itself was an attractive looking stone building, with formal pillars and an entrance porch. At the allocated time, we were met at the door by a very friendly and informative helper, who described areas of the house we may may be interested to know about, as well as some of the history of the house and family.
I particularly liked the entrance hall, and the many beautiful pictures hung on every available wall space. The house had a warmth of its own, and travelling up the stairs and into the bathrooms, then bedrooms, there was a lot to see and take in. The rooms felt very lived in and some of the rooms had more modern paintings as well as the collection of family portraits. We found a delightful portrait by our very own, Robert Lenkiewicz, who lived and worked on the Barbican in Plymouth for most of his life.
All in all it was a short visit, we didn’t have time to look around the wonderful gardens this time but there is always that to look forward to! What about you? What’s your favourite place for a break? Where do you go to get away from it all?
