Alternative Tips for a Healthy Life

We all aspire to is a healthy, and long life, and there are many ways in which we can help to achieve this. Here are my top tips and shortcuts to help and inspire you to improve your health and make the best of your situation.

My Top Tips:

  1. Smoothies and Juices – what a wonderful choice to make! Just decide whether you want to go down the smoothie route, or the juicing route.  There are numerous recipes depending on your taste buds, and what your goals are.  Some of my favourites to start you off are:
      • Green juices (spinach or kale, ginger, celery and apple).
      • Kefir smoothies (Kefir, fruit, chia seeds, cod liver oil, and honey).
      • Colourful carrot, ginger & tumeric smoothie.
  2. Beverages such as Green tea (I choose Clearspring Organic Sencha), Essiac tea, one cup of coffee a day, chai or spicy chai tea. And most important, drinking plenty of water.
  3. Healthy snacks to nibble on when the hunger pangs are getting to you – my choices are carrot and celery sticks and hummus.
  4. Supplements that are quick acting, and pack a punch, such as – Vit D, B12, (C to take orally or by infusion) Omega 3 etc
  5. Specific supplements for identified health issues such as high blood pressure, heart related, diabetes, cancer related – there are numerous website that help you to choose.
  6. Pro and Prebiotics to help you maintain a healthy gut – you can have this in tablet or liquid form.
  7. Holistic therapies such as acupuncture, homeopathy, reflexology, massage, and infrared sauna.
  8. Journal writing as therapy (check out authors such as Kate Thompson, Katherine Adams Gillie Bolton). 
  9. Talking therapies such as CBT or DBT – search out more info on talking therapies on Better Health – Every Mind Matters.
  10. Fitness and exercise. Good nutrition and exercise often go hand in hand. Simple most straight forward is walking – beneficial on so many levels.  Fresh air, sunlight on skin, social interaction, being in natural surroundings. Swimming is good for cardiovascular – gets your heart rate up.  Exercises joints, increases lung capacity.  Good all round workout. Yoga and Pilates – stretching, breathing, calmness. Aim to do about 30 minutes of moderate to high intensity exercise each day, or simply take the stairs and go on short walks whenever possible.
  11. Things you can do yourself such as meditations (with or without guidance). A way of keeping calm, good breathing techniques. Stilling the mind, calming the emotions, slowing down. Getting a good night’s sleep. Sleep deprivation disrupts your regular eating habits, often leading to increased appetite. This results in an increased calorie intake, subsequently leading to weight gain.

Start by choosing just one new goal at a time and work your way through the list.  Some of these tips will resonate more for you than others, and therefore choose the ones that attract you the most.  Above all, be aware of your health and happiness and make sure you check in with yourself on a daily basis.
